Transfer FTM file to new computer

I have Generations Family Tree Maker published by Sierra. Initially installed in 1998 on Windows 98. I have over 5000 names in database. I recently purchased windows XP and have difficult time transfering file to new computer. I exported by GEDCOM to my e-mail on new computer, but I get message that computer cannot read program. I also copied my old file to 1GB jump drive and downloaded to My Documents on new computer, but my Family Archives Viewer keeps popping up stating I need to insert a CD. I have even inserted my original installation disc ( that came with the old FTM program) when I tried to open the file, but all I get is new installation set-up. Any help would be most apreciated.
