Generations on a network

For security reasons I've set up a small home network and I had hoped to use my newly installed Generations XP to "look at" Generations uds files stored on my small server. Unfortunately I get a message that the 'File cannot be opened'. The files open satisfactorily if I copy them onto my local machine (which shows that Generations is working) and other applications such as Word and Access are also OK (which shows that all necessary permissions are working across the network). I'd be grateful for any advice - even if it is to give up as impossible. Many thanks in anticipation.
