I am a novice at the computer. For the last few months, I have been entering data into my Generations Family Tree Plus program. I now have over 12,000 entries. I bought CDs (a first) and tried to back up my information onto them. Although I am following the instructions and the CDs show that the data has indeed been copied, I am unable to open anything I have saved from Generations Family Tree Plus. When I attempt to open a document, I see a yellow triangle surrounding an exclamation mark and a message saying "Unable to open this file." I have called Dell, and because I can open other non-genealogical documents I have saved to CD, they feel that the Generations software is at fault. Clearly, I am doing something wrong. Again, the problem is not with saving to a CD. It is with opening the saved files.
Must I do something special to open a Generations backup file? I am afraid that I might lose all of my work if I don't back things up ASAP. I really would like to share my research with my family and others, but the CDs do not open on their computers either.
I would appreciate any help you can give me with this problem. My computer runs on Windows XP.
