Anyone want to help with my brick wall???

I've got Alexander Marshall HILL, born about 1828 in TN. I have him as a single man in the 1850 Fulton County, KY census. Then he moved to Graves County, KY as a married man for the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses. I know all about his marriages and descendants. But I don't know how to find out who his parents were. There are lots of HILLs in the earlier censuses of the surrounding counties of both KY and TN, but nothing to definitively connect him to his parents. Since a lot of the probate records for those areas have not been indexed, it looks like I have months if not years of tedious reading ahead of me in the original records. Anyone have any other suggestions?
