Giving a bond for someone

What exactly is giving a bond for someone? I'm assuming it's some kind of legal transaction but for what?

Example: John Watson, West Ella, Yeoman, bond for Anthony Brough of Hull a mariner, Oct 1742.

Would Anthony Brough be of age or could he have been under 21?
