Just ran across your question.

Years ago, and sometimes even now, females were buried in clothes that would make them appear to be sleeping. Even now funeral homes have gowns like negligees for the family to purchase for females to be buried in.

It is true that orphan's clothes probably did belong to the orphanage. Friends just adopted from the Ukraine and had to leave all the child's clothing there.

As I was typing this I just remembered that even long ago the men were buried in suits. Never saw a man buried in pajamas.
