It's NOT a "book' but, instead, it's a collection of the original records maintained by the company and I doubt that you can "check it out" from anywhere other than the library itself. This sort of project requires serious research - not "fly fishing" or random postings to message boards hoping someone will have a genealogical "movement" and just dump some goodies on you. A book was published, around 2007, I think, on the history of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, the owner/operators the S/S "Hermann". It can be found with a simple Goggle search. I easily fund several period newspaper articles concerning the disaster, one giving a first-hand account of the wreck by the captain, who survived, and the names of the first mate and another crewman, a fire tender I believe, neither of whom survived.
IF you intend to dive this wreck (how else are you going to locate remains?) then I certainly hope your "prep work" is spot on or else, one day, someone might just be looking for the descendants of NOBU ARAI - lost at sea ......Rick
