In Bergues, France (department of nord/North 59), there is the tomb of John Hadfield, captain of veterans of the Kingdom of England, who died in Bergues on 14 January 1819, aged about 60 years, born in Manchester, Lancashire, husband of Ann Shoi--, aged about 36 years. John Hadfield was the son of Jean [John] Hadfield, merchant, who died at Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight, and Dorothy ---.
On the tomb is written that it was the only son of John and Ann who erected the tomb of his father on his return from the Indies in August 1850, in memory of his father and of his mother Ann, who died in London on 29 April 1850.
For several years now, we have been maintaining his tomb.
Who was John Hadfield? What was he doing in France? Who were his parents? What was the maiden name of his wife? And his son—was he married?
