PDana- Well, the story goes that he came from Switzerland to NYC, and her family was visiting NYC from Canada. I know for a fact he was Catholic. She was 15, he wasn't much older, and they supposedly married right away. It is to my understanding that because he didn't have an established church on this side of the globe, that they would have had to go either to another faith, or to her hometown Catholic church. (There also begs the question, were they really married? I think so, because he was very staunch in his beliefs). I have been busy for a little while, but hopefully this week I'll get some "research" time in- I am trying to figure out what would be the likeliest church in Quebec for her family. The only trouble is her name is spelled many various ways, and I have contacted St. Gabriel's in Prarie du Chien, Wisconsin. They were very helpful, but also agreed that there is no known set name for her. (See my post to other posters on this thread). When she died in childbirth, she was buried in the Catholic cemetery, but when the second wife died, they had my g-grandmother dug up and moved to another cemetery, one that has baffled the church today. I don't know her parent's names, and ironically, the surnames are quite common, because I've tried researching the multiple spellings in Wisconsin. The church in Wisconsin says there is no marriage record for my ggrandparents, SO, back in the haystack to find the needle! I appreciate your insight, I've learned a little more on how to go about this, as I wasn't too sure how to, and I figured my options were very limited- Apparently not! (Thank goodness!)
