delve more into the naming practices of where your ancestor is from

Yes--I am aware of the naming practices in Amsterdam in mid 1600's.

In my records I identify an individual and include all 14 variations of his name.
Pieter Carsten
Pieter Karstensen
Pieter PIETERSEN
ETC

But I post only one name to rootsweb.com to discover other descendants of the individual.

MY FOCUS IN ON PIETER---
the groom in 1679 marriage to Rebecca

I note that other researches have assigned him a surname of OSTRANDER even though this name was not seen in a written record until after 1760.

Does this practice have a name?
