Vocabulary: Assigning a surname to remote ancestor

A man living in 1660 within 60 miles of Albany was known to his neighbors as James. His father was John, so he sometimes identified himself as James Johns son. (in his Dutch or French or German language).

In 1780, the descendants of James had established a surname, which appeared in church records, tax rolls etc.

They choose the surname BENNET

So, when I create a pedigree, I go back to James' record and assign him the surname BENNET.

VOCABULARY QUESTION
What term is used to describe the assignment of a surname to an ancestor ?

PMSA ? Post Mortem Surname Assignment ?

RAAS ? Retro Active Assignment of Surname ?

Examples of this practice can be discovered by examination of the ancestors of Maria PIER (1711) and the ancestors of Alexander Ostrander (1783).
