Books with wrong information have been around for centuries. Modern works (book and electronic media) need the same attention. HOW is the problem.
Realize from the outset that sometimes you cannot change these people. You must try to do so, but also know that some just will not view Genealogy as a process of fact-finding.
Ran into the same issue with my maiden name, and a book (1984)considered 'gospel' by the authors and Family Assoc.
Repeated attempts to make corrections met with a stone wall by them. (Have scars on my forehead from the effort).
This was before Net Genealogy, and now their junk has been
spread around cyberspace.
I tried to fix it, they preferred their fantasy. To put it mildly - accuracy is NOT a criteria with them.
Now I just monitor the surname site (here and at Ancestry), I post back to certain queries, offering to help them on the immigration data (ca 1635) and Gen 1 people - the one line I know is false.
Regardless of what is published, I am responsible for checking my individual-line information and making sure I have it right.
