I have noticed the meaning of "Black Dutch" seemed to change from location to location, and time to time. I would research the history of the area your ancestors were during the time frame they were there. Then as you read about the different explanations of the term, you may pick up on which one probably refers to your ancestors. Some Cherokee who wished to hide their ancestry to avoid the Trail of Tears removal told people they were Black Dutch to hide their true heritage, and avoid forced removal. There are several sites that help with Cherokee genealogy; the problem is; if they claimed another ancestry- they probably will not show up on Cherokee Rolls. Some of their relatives may though so you might search for the surname on the rolls for clues to other family members.
