You can look at copies of the same microfilms that NARA employees will be looking at for about 1/4 of the cost by renting them through your local Mormon church Family History Center and maybe (if it has a genealogical section) your public library. I get mine through both of the mentioned sources. The trick is to find which film out of a universe of thousands of films is the one you want. Why don't you spend some time with the librarians at either of the mentioned sources and learn how it is done? One advantage of doing it yourself is you can bring to bear all your knowledge, and the NARA employees will look only for the name you advise them of. For example, you might find a whole family traveling together; the NARA employees might very well ignore the rest of the family, notwithstanding the fact that they all have the same surname.
