Relationships

I am having a hard job understand relationships (arn't we all)as far as, for instance, I have a relation who was born in the late 1700's who is a 1st Cousin, 5 times removed. What does this mean? I thought a 1st cousin (or just a cousin) was the offspring of a brother or sister of a persons mother or father. This particular relation is not, she goes back a few generations. As far as "5 times removed" this has me completely baffled. Can anyone explain this to me?
