Barrie:

Further to the family or families of Alexander and George I located them in the 1851 and 1841 Censuses for Scotland.

1851 Census Ayr-Ayrshire Enumeration District:4
Address: 244 High Street

GEMMELL
Alexander, age 29, head, Mason, born Ayrshire-Dalmellington
Helen, age 26, wife, born Ayrshire-Dailly

1841 Census Dalmellington-Ayrshire Enumeration District:4
Address:-

GEMMELL
Jean, age 40, born Ayrshire
Alex, age 15, Labourer, born Ayrshire
Agness, age 14, born Ayrshire
Georg, age 10, born Ayrshire
Hellen, age 8, born Ayrshire

1851 Census Dalmellington-Ayrshire Enumeration District:5
Address: 3 Midton Closs

GEMMELL
William, 60, W, Stone Dyker, born Ayrshire-Dalmellington
George, 22,son,U,Journeyman Mason, Ayrshire-Dalmellington
Jean, 28, dau, U, HouseKeeper, born Ayrshire-Dalmellington
Jean, 4, grndau, born Ayrshire-Dalmellington

This info solves the mystery of relationship/parentage. Both are brothers and are the sons of William Gemmell and Jean Halbert. It appears that Jean, however, had died by 1851 and her daughter Jean, b 1823, became the family House Keeper.

Regards, Hugh
