GEMMELL M'COURT WHITESIDE HOOD (McHOOD)
Posted by: Brenda MacCulloch (ID *****9066) Date: May 17, 2006 at 13:09:53

Hi everyone,

I have just found my ggggrandmother's Mary GEMMELL nee HOOD (McHOOD)aged 57yrs in 1877 (so born abt 1820), death certificate in Ayrshire, Scotland and it gives her parents details as:

Mary HOOD (MCHOOD) nee WHITESIDE
Edward Hood (McHOOD) occupation Mason.

Mary GEMMELL nee HOOD (McHOOD) and her husband David GEMMELL were noted on 1861 Scottish census as being born in IRELAND. I have not found a marriage for them in Scotland so am assuming they married in Ireland before coming to Scotland.

David GEMMELL died 1875 aged 55yrs so born about 1820, in the parish of Straiton, Ayrshire, Scotland, occupation 'Ag Labourer'. His parents details are:

John GEMMELL occupation 'Agricultural Labourer'
Annie maiden surname M'COURT or it could be McCourt

As David has given his birthplace as IRELAND, I am assuming that John and Annie are Irish.

My cousins and I are direct descendants of these folk and would appreciate any help in finding out more about their origins.

Kind regards,
Brenda
Hamilton, New Zealand
