Hello Monique,
The name Bellemare originated from Jean-Baptiste Gelinas who took on the name Bellemare and his brother Pierre Gelinas took the name of Lacourse. The oldest brother Etienne Gelinas kept the surname of Gelinas who I'm descended from. Jean-Baptiste and Pierre changed their surnames when they settled in Yamachiche, Quebec, Canada in the early 1700's.
Are you related to the Bellemare family? I have much info on this family as well as the Gelinas family. Let me know if you need any more help as I can send you much info.
Bob Gelinas
