Dear Jeffrey Bassett,
I'm afraid you've been misled about Joseph Antoine Bassett's antecedents by a garbled transcription of the record of his marriage to Celina Mireau (not Moreau), daughter of François Mireau and Marguerite Brisson of Stanley township, Huron County, Ontario. The Joseph Bessette (a resident of Michigan) who married Celina Mireau was not the son of Clemence and Gelinas (Cate) Bessette; he was the widower of "late Clemence Gelinas". Joseph and Celina married on February 28, 1870 in McKillop twp, Huron County. Having seen this document, it would seem likely that it was not "an Indian lady" that Joseph married in 1861 but Clemence Gelinas, the daughter of Claude Gelinas Lacourse of Stanley township, Huron County.
It also seems very unlikely that Joseph Antoine Bassett was born in Goderich, Ontario about 1830. The Canada Company acquired the undeveloped area known as the Huron Tract in the late 1820s and the company's Warden of the Forests chose what would become Goderich as his base, but there wouldn't have been much there by 1830; and the French didn't start settling in Huron County until 1848. It seems much more likely that he would have been born in Quebec and that the Bessettes came to Canada West (Ontario) along with the Gelinas and Mireau and other French families who settled in Stanley and Hay townships.
