Beverley,
Glad the Red Deer Gehrkes were yours.I had read the 1901 Canadian census microfilm about 2 years ago but hadn't read any more than I needed.Looking at the Canadian GenWeb site for Alberta turned up the on-line list that looked like it might provide an explanation. Thanks for verifying my suspicion and clearing up the existence of two families headed by August Gehrke, one age 46, the other age 49 in 1901.
Right now I can say that the August Gehrke, John Lanham and Carl Hickethier in the Ponoka 1901 census are mine.I suspect that Charles Gehrke and Julius Gehrke are related to August but that is based strictly on location.Time for some more research.
I can also say that I don't believe that any of my August Gehrke descendents remained in Canada.I've found them in the 1910 and 1920 censuses and have family information about their whereabouts after that time.
Janis.
