I have since found out through another family member that William was married to Diana Walker Gehr, also of Summit, Crawford co., Pa., in 1857. They had daughters named, Ada and Nellie, and sons, William and Dale. William Sr. died in 1904, and he and Diana are buried in Colony, Anderson co., Kansas. His tombstone has Maj. Gear on it as he changed the spelling of the name like many other Gehr's did. During the Civil War, he was in the 169th Pennsylvania Reg., Co. K mission, rank of First Lieutenant, and then became a Major in the 199th Pennsylvania Reg., Co.F. At least one brother, James Finley Gehr, and their father, Samuel Gehr, Jr., moved from Pennsylvania to Kansas.
My previous research on this part of the Gehr family was partly in error and I apologize if it has caused any inconvenience.
