Notes for RANSOM GEAR/GAER:
According to James Gear: Ransom and Polly had 5 boys and 4 girls in Orange Co. VA., Casey, Co. KY and Bond, Co. IL. They moved to Casey Co Ky about 1802.
According to Oscar Gear: Ransom and Polly are aged 82 and 80 in the 1860 Hardin Co. IA Census as Ransom and M. GEER, nearby their son Shelton in Marshall Co. IL in Marshall Co. IL Ransom was in Bond Co. IL by 1824 and there at least uuntil 1833.
It appears the Ransom GEAR family used Pleasant Cemetery Hardin Co. IA.
According to Gordon GAER: Somewhere in the migration from Virginia ~ Kentucky ~ Illinois ~ Iowa, Ransom and his family line almost entirely evolved into the use of the 'Gaer' form and spelling. This may have occurred purposely, to more closely reflect the way it was pronounced, or perhaps to be eligible for more land grants, or maybe just through happenstance.
Ransom Gear was married to Polly Lamb on Feb. 23,1802 by J. P. Isham Bingham, in Orange, Co. VA. See Orange Co, VA Marriage Book, 1775 to 1820 page 57. Bondsman - Jonathan Lamb.
Ransom and Mary 'Polly' are buried at Lawn Hill Cemetery near Providence, IA. Other Gaer's also.
Pleasant Cemetery-Hardin Co. Iowa was used by a number of the Ransom Gear Family including Ransom's Daughter, Polly Ann (Gaer) Smith, .
Another Cemetary used extensively by the Gaer's is at The RedLine Church, Shelby Co. IA. Located there are Cavendar, Umri, Almarion, Philip, Roy, Perry, Merle, Ellie, Rosanne, Clementine, Annie, Mary, Mae and Frank.
Greenville, IL. The Story of Old Mt. Nebo & Families Buried there.
The following is from the "Story of Mt. Nebo" (United Baptist Church in Bond County, Illinois):
Page 121 - Ransom Gaer was a member of the Bond County Court from August 1824 through August 1825. His name headed a list of 23 who organized Mt. Nebo church on February 9, 1833. he was the first clerk and he served until July 28, 1834, when he and his wife made application for a line of dismission, at which time John L. Council was appointed to replace him. Ancestor of Anderson Geer who joined Mt. Nebo in May 1866. (Fray Anderson Geer - son of Fountain Geer, born 17, Jan 1836). Ransom was a member of Silver Creek United Baptist Church in Madison County before that. His name is spelled Gaer in all church minutes, but it is spelled Gear in other papers and publications of the time. The reason given for the dismission was that the building currently being used as the church had burned to the ground and the family wished to start with another church closer to where they lived. Gaer and his wife had come to Bond County from Kentucky.
Page 1 - Ransom Gaer was an original signer of the ten tenets laid out in writing upon formulation of the Mt. Nebo United Baptist Church in 1833.
Page 2 - Rules of decorum were formulated for the above church on March 9, 1833, whereupon the church manifested Elder Peter Long for their pastor to attend them, and Ransom Gaer was appointed clerk.

Notes for CARPENTER (CAVENDAR GAER) GEAR:
Cavendar was active in the State of MO in the Civil War and his legs were amputated after being frozen in the service and he was buried in Redline Cemetery, Shelby Co. IA.
According to Gordon GAER: From Sanford's History; Carpenter Geer was one of several who petitioned Major Wood of Fort Dodge Army Post for a fort for protection against the Indians. It was granted on June 11, 1850 and Fort Robinson was built. Fort Robinson stood one mile East and about one mile South of the present junction of Highway #30 and #14. South of Marshalltown. A monument now marks the site erected by the DAR. People came there for protection. Once stayed more than two weeks. Under orders from their Commander, Wm. Asher, Jack Brady, and Carpenter Geer put on a sham battle under cover of darkness to scare everybody into staying in the Fort a while longer than most of them thought was necessary.
Ref #977.755 -S 224 H - State College of Iowa Library on page 33 'History of Marshall County, Iowa' Recites:
Carpenter Gaer, we know him to be Cavendar Gaer, another of the original garrison at Fort Robinson, built the first saw mill in the county on Timber Creek, (this was between Marshalltown and LeGrand) but this enterprise fell into the hands of a Mr. Griffith. -
Mr. Jackson Smith had a splendid farm, was the first Justice of the Peace in the County, and he married the first couple that ever placed their necks in the yoke matrimonial within the limits of Marshall County. The names of the happy pair were Mr. Almarion Gaer, son of Carpenter Gaer, and a Miss Ballard, daughter of Philip Ballard of Iowa Township. Mr. Smith reports it was one of the pleasantest times in the whole cycle of pioneer hilarity. They had a good supper, danced, and joked the girls, and tucked the bride into her snowy bed drapery and laughed at her discomforture.
The next page tells of what a time Philip Ballard had in getting his wagons and horses and equipment and family across the Iowa River in the Wintertime when they came to the County.
Sanford's History says - At one time Mr. Carpenter Geer went to Jack Braddys, a near neighbor who lived only seven or eight miles away. Being a widower, he wished to pay his addresses to a young lady there. Taking Jack by the ear he whispered softly - 'Do you think she will set', meaning that if she would 'set' with him it was the equivalent of an affirmative answer to his suit. Whether she set or not Sanford did not say.

RANSON GEER
from: The Greene County Record, Stanardsville, Va., Thursday, April 26, 1928:
Ransom Geer, a civil war veteran, passed to the great beyond Wednesday, April 18, 1928. His body was laid to rest in Temple Hill Cemetery Friday. Services were conducted by Miss Carrie Makely. Mr. Geer leaves a fine war record. He lost the sight of his left eye in the hard fought battle of the Wilderness. He had lived a quiet life and was known by many people outside his immediate neighborhood. He was in his 89th year and was highly respected by all who knew him. It was said by his comrades that no better soldier than he ever shouldered a rifle. Our old soldiers are fast thinning out and soon all that will be left will be their fine records carved on the enduring monuments to make their descendants proud of the valiant service and sacrifice they gave unto their beloved country. The deceased leaves the following children: Mrs. Rosa Shiflett, Messers. James, Bob, Thomas, and John Geer and Mrs. Mollie Marshall.

Notes for EMMANUEL AMBROSE MORRIS:
Ambrose Morris
from: The Greene County Record, Greene Co., VA, June 1922:
Ambrose Morris, one of the oldest and best known men of Monroe District, departed this life June 13, 1922, about 2 P.M. Mr. Morris was born February 7, 1842, and had passed the four score mark. He lived all his life near the place he was born which is on what is now called Wyatts Mountain a spur of the Blue Ridge. He was a man of sterling character, firm and immovable from what he considered right. He led a modest and quiet Christian life, devoted to his dear wife and children, which he was especially interested in. Mr. Morris was an industrious man always well providing for his family and their needs both financially and otherwise. He was a member of the Christian Church most all of his life, being one of the charter members of Old Mt. Union church which was later moved to the Pines and the name changed to Mt. Olivet. He remained true to his church till death, which showed he was a man of firm conviction. The world needs men of this type in every walk of life, a man or woman that is going from one church to another expecting to better their condition in life find out in the end they are sadly mistaken. Mr. Morris leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Mary and two daughters. Mrs. Charlottie Roach, of Dyke, and Miss Rosa Morris, who has so faithfully stayed with her father and cared for his every need until his last moments he left two sons, Jenus Morris, of March and Jonas Morris, of Dyke. Mr. Morris had four brothers two of which are living and two have passed to the great beyond; his living brothers are Isaac Morris of Nimrod and Bluford Morris of Mission Home. Both brothers that preceded to the other world were Benjamin and Nathaniel Morris of Pirkey. He had two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Morris and Mrs. Rebecca Shiflett of near Pirkey. The county has lost a good and useful citizen, his wife a loving husband, his children a kind father, the community a good neighbor. The burial took place on his farm in the presence of a large concourse of people; who come to pay the last tribute of respect to a good man. His funeral will be preached sometime during the summer months.

Notes for NOAH JACKSON MORRIS:
Noah Jackson Morris
by W.A. Crawford
Greene County Record, Thursday, January 26, 1928:
Noah Jackson Morris, one of the oldest and best known men in the Pirkey community, passed to the great beyond Jan. 14,1928, at his home in his 88th year. Mr. Morris had been somewhat feeble for some time but bore his sickness with a Christian's fortitude. Mr. Morris was a charter member of Mt. Olivet Christian Church having been a member of the old Mt. Union Church in Bacon Hollow which was the first Christian Church in Greene County. Mr. Morris was active member of the Christian Church for more then a half a century. In all he was a member of the church for 60 years, always taking an active part in preaching services, Sunday School and Prayer Meetings until he was too old to take active part.
Mr. Morris was a staunch Republican in politics, always taking strong interest in his party. He was always at the polls early and fought for his men all day. He influence was always sought by men who ran for county office. Your writer remembers what a very prominent man said of him once: If he was going to run for a county office he would first find out how Noah Morris stood and if he was against him he would not run. Mr. Morris was a man of fine business qualities one of the most thrifty men in his younger days in his community, being the first man to start a general store in that section which he succesfully ran for years.
He was devoted to his family and kind to his wife who died a few years ago. He was a good neighbor accommodating to unfortunate people who needed help. He would always help widows and people who needed his assistance. Men of his kind are rare and more of them needed. His funeral services was conducted by his pastor Dr. W.T. Walters of Harrisonburg at the Evergreen Church in the presence of a large congregation of friends and relatives. His body was laid to rest by the side of his dear wife. The grave was profusely decorated by beautiful flowers in token of his memory. (I left the songs and what was preached out.) His grandchildren were his pall-bears. Mr. Morris leaves to mourn his loss three sons, George N. Morris, James Noah Morris and Lively Scott Morris all of Pirkey; five daughters Eddie Rachel Via, Charlotte Morris Gibson both of Alexandria; Malissa Morris Shifflett, Ludie Morris Shifflett, and Allie Morris Shifflett who stayed with her father until his death.
