Hello: In my 18 years of researching GEER/Gear/Gere, the ONLY time I have encountered a GREER name (and it has happened with irritating regularity in print) is in book indexes, obits, anniversary announcements in the paper and social secruity papers where it is a MIS-spelling. For instance, the the person who wrote of the Geer-Bumgarner family descends from the English Geer/Gere/Gear family which settled first in MA and then in CT in the 1600s. Nina Mae Geer (1895-1980) was dau/o David Thomas Geer (b. 1867) & Julia Frances Williamson. David was s/o Richard M. Geer (b. 1841 WV and Drusilla Dye). Richard's father was ID# 1165 in the 1923 Geer Genealogy, by Walter Geer. That is, he was Jonathan Geer of the 7th Generation from immigrant George Geer.
In my experience Grier and Greer are Irish surnames.
