My ancestor Clarissa [Clara]born at St Michel d'Yamaska, Quebec, 28 Jan 1834, is documented in my research, via her 200 page civil war pension application, with her family surname spelled "Giguere", "Gerard", "Julierre" and "Geer". People wrote down the surname the way they HEARD it. This side of my family is French Canadian.
