Lisa, thanks for the interesting reply. It's just possible that there may be some connection between these Geers, it's certainly worth looking into. I will be going to CT to do some onsite research this spring, and will look for that name as well. The "mulatto" designation is so difficult to interpret. In the case of Philena it was not recorded the same with all her children either, but the thing that makes it more significant in my mind is that for many of the people on the pages where her name was recorded there was nothing recorded if they were white, but they did take the trouble to record something if they were not white. I noticed that habit of recording in other nearby towns as well.
Maybe we're onto something here.
