My Helen born 1870 was named after John's wife Helen Spalding. His brothers George and Peter are related to Carole. George married Hellen Gifford which made Carole and I related. By the way, I never lived in the UK. I have always lived in Canada. Howard has done a large research on the Geddes clan and lives in Scotland so he might be able to help you.
