The Garran (spelled many ways, Garan, Gearing, etc.) family legend is that they were descended from French pirates on the Garonne River, but there is absolutely no evidence of that. The first ancestor we can trace is Richard Gearing who shows up in the
cod-fishing port of Gloucester MA about 1717 to marry Lydia Carlisle of York. He died about 1722-3--at sea? and she after 1742 after remarrying to Andrew Elwell. Given the coastal connections of Mass and the Carolinas, is it possible Richard came from Charleston--does the name show up in the family there? Jim Gould
