To Gayle Family Researchers, In doing research on my Father's Lineage I happened upon a photo of Robert Brown Gayle of Louisiana. He died in 1916. He descends from Josiah & Mary Gayle, but I don't. However, he is a dead ringer for my Father who descends from Thomas Gayle (1750-1824) who married Susannah P. Smith and was one of the 4 Gayle brothers who fought in the Rev. War. It has been said that they came from Scotland or England. I believe that Josiah Gayle and Thomas Gayle were related to each other and doing research in England/Scotland might be the key to finding out. There is no evidence right now to show that they are related, and if they are it may be distant. However, in 1891 88% of all Gayle families lived in Yorkshire with 6% living in Cheshire and 6% living in London. London doesn't count because it is a mecca and i'll bet those Gayles all originated from York. I believe if we can find documentation in Scotland or England about the Gayle Family sending off someone to the Colonies, or of a diary or records of the 4 brothers getting on a boat, or anything, and also to find Josiah and family too. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all open ears. No one seems to really know who the parents of Josiah are, and who the parents of the 4 brothers, Robert, Thomas, Matthew (Matthias) and George are. I am almost certain that they were connected by blood. Also, The names Buckner, Bartlett, Josiah, Christopher, Matthew, William, all of these names appear in both families. Is this a coincidence? The fact that the families were both in the South, Virginia Colony to Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, etc. (not in that order) might be coincidence, but the names are not. There is one possibility: The Josiah Gayle family and the Peter Gayle family had a falling out and severed ties, denying any connection for generations. Could there be some document on this? The thing is, usually something like that is never written down except in a diary. Is anyone interested in doing research in England and Wales, and Scotland maybe? I am headed to Kentucky and Louisiana, Virginia, and South Carolina to do research, but next year will plan to head to the U.K. I will compile all i can on the Gale/Gayle name whether it is relevant to me or not, but focusing on Pre-1800 data. Any and all feedback, advice, opinions, and ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also, if someone has info on any oroots, please share with everyone. Peace! Good day! -philip gayle Notify Administrator about this message?
