I realize the lineage you show represents a commonly accepted lineage for Gov. John GAYLE.However, Somerset, MD Ct. records show that John, son of George & Elizabeth "Betty" [Denwood] GALE died 1748 leaving chn.George, Betty, Mary, Henry, & Levin. No Matthias or Matthew, and he died 6 years before the Governor's father was born 12 Sep 1754.
I think it's far more likely that Matthew Gayle, father of the Gov. was the son of Matthew & Lucretia [Billups] Gayle, the latter Matthew being a brother of Josiah who d. Sumter, SC abt. 1794.More than a few records can be cited to support that. For the sake of brevity, I'll just refer to the will (Edgefield, SC 1808) of Lucretia Gayle - see
