The oft-quoted 1694 letter of Jane (Sparks) Gayer to her son William, which was supposedly in the Historical Library of Topeka,Kansas, per BEARD FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGY, Ruth Lindenberger, @1939, pp. 12 and 13, mentions by name only "your brother Sir John;" "cousin Jane Bray;" 'your brother Hooper;" and "your sister Marcy." The bone of contention seems rather more to prove descent from English King Edward I, than whose brother is whom, for also on page 13, author, Lindenberger quotes from Sir John Gayer's supposed pedigree which begins, "Sir John Gayer, Governor of Bombay, India, descendant of Edward 1st, King of England, and his first wife Eleanor of Castile, daughter of Ferdinand III, king of Castile." She states further, "Our royal descent from King Edward I of England to William Gayer of Nantucket has been verified and accepted by the Royal College of Heralds in London, England." Pages 7-12 of the BEARD FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGY, has "OUR ROYAL ANCESTRY From Britannica Encyclopedia. I have checked that lineage up one side and down the other and find descrepancy after descrepancy when comparing it with other published royal lineages. The fact of the matter is that I can never say with certainty if any of it is true unless I do the research myself. I find the so-called position paper which so upset Humphrey Gayer's descendants rather haughty and amusing and what the author says in that is "PRESUMABLY the two William Gayers were quite humble and not the sons and grandsons of prominent Plymouth merchants or scions of Cornish gentry . . . or descendants of the noble Courtenays or remote offspring of King Edward I." It doesn't appear that he has done the research either! I'd like to see some in-depth research on this matter instead hearing about connections in fluffy genealogies. At least we can be happy that we can prove our lineage up to Humphrey.
