Comrade Gay was the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic for the 1941-1942 term, one of the last to command the organization and among the last four dozen veterans in the country. He died at the age of 97 years (est 1945-1946) and was known living when photographed at the National Encampment in Des Moines, Iowa in 1944. His last known residence was Nashua, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, but he was of Pepperell, Middlesex, Massachusetts and lived there for most of his adult life. According to the 1890 Veterans Fragment, his Civil War service was as a landsman, US Navy, aboard the ships Princeton and Philadelphia, from 27 Jan 1864 to 15 Feb 1867. Prior to this term of service George had been married. The 1900 census records him with his third wife Emma and the daughter of his second marriage Edith (b Feb 1886), at which time he was a paper maker. The 1930 census records him with fourth? wife Jennie (name same as the first wife, be not confused!), at which time he was retired, but declared himself a vet of the Civil War. Seeking burial location and biographical tidbits for the Sons of Union Veterans web pages and graves registration. Depending on where he is buried, he might be recognized as the last veteran of his state of burial.
