John Gay of NC had a number of children and one son (my ancestor) named James Gay moved to Monroe Co. MS in the 1830's and established a large plantation there. He also had a large family and they all moved to Texas in 1851 except for two sons, John Hampton Gay (my great great grandfather) who lived on a plantation called Blackjack in Oktibbeha Co. near Starkville. He had two sons, one being my great grandfather named Charles E. Gay born 1841 another named James Bates Gay who moved to Texas after the Civil War. Your Gay may come from the other son of James Gay who stayed in MS. His name was John Darrington Gay (1819-1898) and he lived near Aberdeen, MS. He married twice and had a large family - I have the names of a few of them. If you have more information on your ancestor - full name, birthdate, marriege date, etc. - perhaps I can match it up to the data I have on John D. Gay's family.
