John Gawthrop, Surgeon and Apothecary of Bath, 1837


       This is the last will and testament of John Gawthrop of the city of Bath, Surgeon and Apothecary. I give and devise unto my dear wife Katherine Gawthrop and her assigns during her natural life all that my close or freehold land called sand common, with the appurtances situated in the parish of Stower Provost, in the county of Dorset, and also all those copyhold lands held of the manor of Gillingham in the said county of Dorset . And after the decease of my said wife then as to the said freehold land in the parish of Stower Provost, I give and devise the same unto and to the use of my nephew William Thomas Gawthrop, his heirs and assigns forever. And also as to the said copyhold lands, I give the same unto and to the use of my nephew John Charles Gawthrop, his heirs and assigns forever, avowing to the customs of the said manor of Gillingham.
       I give to my wife absolutely all wines, spirits and other articles of household consumption in my house at the time of my decease, together with such of my books as she may use or select to her own use.
       I give and devise all and singular my real and personal estate whatsoever, including my money in funds and on mortgage security, over which I have any disposing power, subject to the payment of my debts and financial and testamentary expenses, and to a legacy of £10 to Christian Hodges if living in my service at the time of my decease, unto my said wife to the intent that my said wife and her assigns may possess and enjoy the same, and service the rents and annual profits thereof deriving her natural life.
       Immediately after the decease of my said wife I give and devise all and singular my said residuary estate unto and to the use of Sarah Gawthrop, the widow of my late brother, the Reverend Thomas Holden Gawthrop, his heirs, executors and assigns, upon trust, and for the sole benefit of William Thomas Gawthrop, John Charles Gawthrop and Mary Ann Gawthrop, the three children of my late brother, or such issue of them as is living, whether his or her parent be then living or dead.
       Lastly I appoint my said wife sole executor of this my last will, this 28th day of November, in the year of our lord 1836.
