Extract of the will of Elizabeth Gawthrop, widow of Rev.Christopher Gawthrop, 1793.
- Elizabeth Gawthrop of Kirkhurst in Sussex.
- Rev. Littlefield of (Warhurst?) to attend my funeral.
- Her brother Richard Singer, and two nephews, William (Ralph?) Sainsbury and William Pope to attend the funeral.
- To nephews William Sainsbury and William Pope a parcel of land in Wiltshire, which was left to Elizabeth by her Aunt Mrs Elizabeth Singer.
- Mentions a pricipal sum of £2,800, made up of £1,600 in government bonds, and £1,200 as owed to her by her brother Richard Singer, to be distributed by the Rev. Bernard Hodgson, pricipal ofHertford College in Oxford, 1/3rd of the mentioned sum of £2,800
- To Richard Singer, 1/3rd of the principal sum mentioned.
- To her sister, Ann Sainsbury, widow of the late Richard Sainsbury of Chippenham, Clothier, 1/3rd of the principal sum mentioned.
- To her sister Mary Pope, widow of Thomas Pope, late Surgeon of Dartford, the remaining 1/3rd of the principal sum.
- To her aforementioned sisters all her table linen and household linen.
- To her niece, Elizabeth Sainsbury, her gold watch.
- To her good freind Bernard Hodgson a ring, of value ten guineas.
A Codicildated Aug 2nd 1793.
- To her nephew Richard Singer, a silver cup, on basis that it not be given away or sold, as it belonged to his great uncle, Richard Singer.
- To Richard & Maria Singer a small silver waiter.
- To her great nephew Thomas (Mitteral?), he being Godson of her husband Mr Gawthrop, a silver tankard.
- To Elizabeth Sainsbury, her wearing apparel, pearls, chain with the trinkets.
- To Her neices Maria (Mitteral?) and (?) Hodgson the two best suits of (?)
- A legacy of £10 to my maidSusan Sergant, who “lives with me at the time of my death”.Also my (?) apparel, with a sum of 5 guinees that “she attend in mourning my funeral”.
Additional
- To her nephew William Sainsbury the mourning ring that I had for Mr Gawthrop.
FURTHER CODICIL (July 20th 1794):
- “I desire that my name, the date of the month and year may be inserted on the monument in Kirchurst church.In this manner also, ‘his widow, who died this time and such a year’ will be enough”.
- “To my neice Elizabeth Sainsbury, my miniature picture of my husband, Mr Gawthrop.”
- The miniature picture of her brother, to his daughter, Maria Singer
- The silver soup ladel to her niece Mrs (?) Hodgson
- “The mourning ring for my mother I give to my sister, Mrs Pope.
- “I desire my young friend Mrs Waller may have on mourning for me £2 12/- 6d.
- ”I should like six horses for the (funeral) coach, and I insist that I may not be enclosed in a leaden coffin”
- The two books of Mr Gawthrop to Mrs Sainsbury
- The silver candlesticks, silver salt spoons and small silver chalice (which was left to Mr Gawthrop by Mrs Elizabeth Singer, and which she desired never go out of the family), also the silver tea things given to Mr Gawthrop by his grandfather to Mrs Mitteral and Mrs Hodgson.
YET A FURTHER CODICIL:
- Elizabeth Gawthrop, late of Kirkhurst in Sussex, but now of Chippenham in Wiltshire.
- Rev.Bernard Hodgson of Hertford College, executor of the sum of £2,600 now held in Govt consolidated annuities in the name of Rev. Christopher Gawthrop., and the further sum of £1,200 as owed by Richard Singer:
- 1/3rd of said funds to her brother, Richard Singer.
- 1/3rd of said funds to her sister, Ann Sainsbury.
- Remaining 1/3rd to her sister Mary Pope.
