Gawthrop Family - Histon Cambridgeshire England Richard Gawthrop my 7x Gt Grandfather married Mary Edwards on August 10th 1728 in Cambridge, England. Richard was a Blacksmith, and the couple subsequently lived in the village of Histon in Cambridgeshire, where they had 6 children. Richard died in 1744 and was buried in the local church on April 1. Mary then remarried to John Marsh at Histon on Oct 9 1746. The fourth child, also called Richard was my 6x Gt Grandfather. He fathered three illegitimate children by his brother John's widow (one of whom, William is my 5x Gt Grandfather), before being tried for Grand Larceny in 1763. He was tried at the Assize court on 25th July 1763, accused of breaking into the house of Thomas Ives and stealing five pounds two shillings. He was found guilty and sentenced to the American penal colonies for a period of 7 years. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has any Gawthrop ancestors in Cambridgeshire, England, as I have been collecting all such references for several years and now have a huge ammount of infromation. There seem to be two main branches of the Gawthrop clan in England, one in the north, based in Yorkshire (and the towns of Skipton, Worksop, Dent and others), one in the South East (Histon in Cambridgeshire especially). I have not as yet been able to find links between these two branches although I'm sure such must exist. Although there are many variations of the surname (Gawthroup, Gawthrope, Galthrop, Galtrop, Gawthorp, and many others), it seems likely that the name would have sprung from the northern village of Gawthorpe in Yorkshire.
