Hi David,
I have heard a few different theories regarding the Gawthrop name origin. Whether rop or orp, orpe and others are common spellings or mis- spellings of the same name I am not sure. There is an ancient village of Gawthrop near the town of Dent in the Yorkshire Dales. It could possibly be a place name.
Regards
Bud Gawthrop
