Hi Johnny,
There is a good deal of Information on The Gawthrop surname. It can be found at www.gawthrop.org, I think they may be moving to another site though, anyway, I would try there first.
Basically there seem to be two branches of the family. One from the north of England around Skipton, Yorkshire and the other from Histon, Camebridgeshire further south. My ancestor is from the latter branch and arrived here in the states in 1763 as a bonded passenger. He settled in Maryland, married in 1770 and there it began. Most of my immeadiate family lived in the Midwest, Illinois and Indiana in particular.
Good luck on your search!, check out the forums for news. Bill Gawthrop has done a lot of research on The Gawthrop family and Colin Huggins has compiled an evergrowing collection on the other side of the pond.
Cordialy
Bud Gawthrop
