I have obtained a few Gawthrop (and variant) First World War service records. This one is for John Gawthorpe, a 2nd Lt, Labor Corps. PRO reference - WO 374/26720


Date and place of birth: 27th August 1883 at Brooke in Wigan, Lancashire.
Occupation in civil life on enlistment: Headmaster of Castleford, Welbeck St, Council school (400 boys).
Height: 5’ 7 ½”
Weight: 10st 10lbs
Chest: Max 37” Min 35”
Address at enlistment: Sunnyside, Park avenue, Castleford, Yorkshire.
Occupation of father: Retired Schoolmaster
Married: Yes. 27th July 1910 at Christchurch, Padgate, Lancashire.
Next of kin: Dora Gawthorpe
Children: Lillian Mary Gawthorpe (born 1914, Feb 1st at 26 Dolcliffe rd, Mexborough, Yorks).

Educational record:
1903 – 05       - Cheshire diocesan training college
1907 – 09       - Rotherham Technical School
1910 – 14       - Sheffield university (mining dept).

Educational Qualifications:
1st class trained certificated Head Master
Licentiate of College preceptors.
Fellow of Royal horticultural Society.
1st class certificate in following subjects (advanced stage):
       Coal mining surveying; heat engines; applied mechanics; chemistry of mine gases (Hons); machine construction.
Sheffield University exams:
       Physiography; organic and inorganic chemistry; theoretical and practical physics; mathematics pure and applied; logic; art (Bd of education); physiology; hygiene; mathematics; astronomy and usual pedagogic subjects.

Record of service:
1903, Sept 20th        - 1905, June 30th - Served in 1st Cheshire and Caernarfon Garrison Artillery.
1915, May 26th        - enlisted in Ranks of 1st London (City of London) Sanitary Company.
1915, Sept 1st        - embarked Southampton to join British expeditionary force.
1916, Sept 24th       - promoted to staff sergeant in the field.
1917, May 29th       - mentioned in despatches.
1917, Jul 21st       - appointed unpaid acting Sergeant major
1918, May 24th        - Boulougne. Attached to Labor corps base depot.
1918, Jun 15th       - discharged from ranks of territorial force on being appointed to a temporary commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Labor Corps
1918, Aug 3rd        - reverted to permanent rank of Staff Sergeant on attachment.
1919, Jan 14th       - relinquished temporary commission on completion of service.

Report of accident or injury:
Date of casualty 26/10/1918
       “I was superintending the burning of the decomposed remains of hhorses. I gave permission for a few vesey lights to be put at the bottom of the fire. One of the case blew out and hit me in the left eye.”
Opinion of GoC Brigade: “I council the 2nd Lt Gawthorpe was to blame for ordering vesey lights to be put on the fire. I am censuring the officer.”

Robert Gawthorpe – Son – Unm – 5 – Born: Sherrington, Lancs
Jane A Gawthorpe – Dau – Unm – 1m – Born: Burtonwood, Lancs
