- A Court roll of Apr 29 1613 (Court held at Stonyborough).
“ - It was presented that Thomas Gawthropp of Cawthorne had made an affray upon Robert Parkyn, and that he wrongfully conducted himself against the peace of the lord king; therefore he was in mercy of the lord” - fined 2/- 8d
- It was presented that a certain John (-blank), servant of Jervase Sheppard had made affray upon Thomas Gawthropp and from him drew blood - fined6/- 8d
- It was presented that Jervase Sheppard had kept and permitted unlawful games in his house, to the annoyance of his neighbours. - fined 4/-
- It is presented that Robert Parkin and Thomas Gawthropp had played an unlawful game; therefore each of them was in mercy. - fined 6d
From ‘a History of Cawthorne’
- 1587, 4th DecA muster of private men and town soldiers within the wapentake of Staincrose at Barnsley, included Richard Gawthorpe (town soldier, properly armed, clavier – which is a kind of musket)
- 1649 account, headed “stocke of several townsmen in goods” included Tho. Gawtherupp assessed at £100

-The minutes of Settle township, 1780
- John Gawthrop of Settle who was put out to apprentice to the late widow Williams by lot on 22nd Sep 1779, has been returned to the town by her succesors, who have availed themselves of an error in the indentures.A new lot was cast for a master for the said boy who fell to Thomas Blackburn.Indentures executed and delivered him to the said Thomas Blackburn with customary allowance.(NB This was a pauper apprenticeship.)
