Dennis GAWTHORP/GAWTHROP, born 21 Feb. 1803, Holbeck, Yorkshire, Eng. and his wife, Salina SAXTON were married 3 Oct. 1824 in Rothwell, Yorkshire Eng. They came to New York in 1847 and directly to Edwards Co. IL. Enroute, Salina died and was buried. Dennis died 2 Dec. 1871, and is buried in Ebenezer Cemetery, at Samsville in Edwards Co. IL
Their children were Benjamin, Joseph Saxton, Mary Josephine, Edwin, Thomas, Abraham and William.
Of these ch. my Joseph Saxton GAWTHORP, born 18 Feb. 1833, in Rothwell, Eng. married Eliza Jane Taylor in Edwards Co. IL on 9 Sept. 1854.
Their children were: Salina, Henry George, Ezra Edwin, Maria Josephine, Robert Atkinson. My direct ancestor, Henry George, born 13, Aug. 1858, Edwards Co. IL, married Miranda POTTER on 1 Jan. 1880.
Ch. of Henry George and Miranda were: William Edward, Charles Fremont, Thomas Jackson, Chester Arthur, Ida Mae, Elbert, Zodia May, Vernie and Pernie (twins), Mary and Elmer.
William Edward, born 28 Nov. 1881, married Phoebe Ellen SHELBY on 2 Dec, 1903. They are buried in Edwards Co. IL. They are my grandparents.
There are several spellings of this surname:
ie: GAWTHROP GAWTHORP GAWTHORPE. I believe they all were connected in England. Open to correspondence and sharing information with any and all spellings !
