My gtgrandfather, Patrick Gavigan, from the Ballyshannon, Donegal Co. area, was b.@1837-38. His father was James Gavigan, however, Patk named his first son, William James,(who also named his son William James). But, the family always referred to them as James. Irish tradition usually named the firstborn son after the paternal grandfather, so it's possible that my gtgtgrandfather was actually a William James Gavigan, too. Patk was the sole heir to James's property when he died before 1870,& any siblings are unknown...Some of Patrick's children were named: William James, Mary, Anne,
Ellen,& Dennis. 7 of his 8 surviving children emigrated to NYC between 1890 and 1903. Also, my grandfather's godfather was Francis McPhelim...and there are other McPhelim sponsors as well. Do you know the name of the 3rd son? Or any additional info about William James Gavigan & Anne Branley, etc.? Supposedly all the Ballyshannon Gavigans were related.
