Gavegan Family Genealogy Forum

Hi Jan! My Gavagan family (Irish spellings include: Gavican, Gavaghan, Gavikin, Gaviken, Gavikan) originated in Boyle, County Roscommon, and I have found baptismal records for five sons of my gr-gr-grandparents, Elizabeth Beirne & Thomas Gaviken: Richard, Thomas, James, Edward, and Robert (b.1818 - 1830). This is not to say that there weren't many more children born into this family; in fact, considering the average size of Irish families back then, it is highly likely that there were others. Many years of records are missing in the Catholic churches during those difficult years. However, if your Simon was born somewhere other than Co. Roscommon, I would have no information that would be helpful to you. Obviously, your Simon emigrated to the U.S. in the same time frame as my Gavagans scattered to the four winds, at the height of the famine. My gr-grfr., Robert, left Ireland in 1847, when he was only about 16 years old; your Simon was even younger than that, so chances are he had an adult accompanying him. Sorry that I haven't been more help to you, and good luck with your search. One good thing is that this surname was quite uncommon, and a search on Griffiths can tell you the places in Ireland where people with this surname lived. I only know of Counties Roscommon, Mayo, and Westmeath, all of which are West or Central Ireland, but then I haven't really looked beyond these Counties. If I can answer any questions for you, I will be happy to do so. Regards, Fran (Francine GAVAGAN Weeks)
