Hi Bonnie

you do have the right Catherine Gavaghan
The obituary lists the siblings as Ann Foley John and Thomas

The other family would make Catherine born from a Thomas
And have Joseph; Bridget, Mary, Annie, and James as her siblings which dose not match the obituary

Stephen is definitely descended from John and Catherine
John and Catherine’s son John was named as John on the census
I think John and James are the same in Latin (Joannus)
But John born to John and Catherine married with the Christian name James
So in a nut shell he was both John and James
I further note that John Gavaghan was deceased in 1883 for the wedding of his
Son John/James Gavaghan Was Catherine also deceased by the time her daughter left
For America

Regards
Geraldine
