Bonnie/Stephen Bonnie we are from the same family branch. There are many Gavaghan Lines but only one with John and Catherine (parents) Ann Thomas John and Catherine (children) Catherine was born on 6th February 1864 in Batley The last paper record of Catherine Gavaghan was at her brothers wedding, (1884) after that we have never found a single trace of her I don’t have excess to any passenger lists, but would be very interested to find out whom John and Catherine trusted enough to allow Catherine the baby of the family to go to America with. It is possible it was John Brennan. A family of Brennans were living in Batley at the time The Gavaghans of that time had a relationship first then married later So Catherine could have been in a relationship with John from 1885 The Gavaghans came from County Mayo in Ireland Stephen has them down coming from Roscommon I have Charlestown or Swinford We would need a paper trail back to these towns to know for sure The spelling of the name Gavaghan changes to Gavahan Gavigan Gavican, Gavikin, When you go back to the Irish records In the 1870s most Irish immigrants could not write. Gavaghan is the English spelling When the Irish arrived in Batley it was surprising to me how many were employed has farm labourers, the towns of Batley, Dewsbury are well built up areas, not The countryside town the Irish of the 1870s would remember. Stephen has given a very accurate description of the town now Bonnie if you come across anymore information on Ann Foleys family I would Be very interested Stephen you seem to be a little ahead of me in the family research Can you give me any more infor on John Gavaghans brothers James and Patrick? The other brother Micheal is that brother to John, Thomas Ann and Catherine Regards Geraldine Notify Administrator about this message?
