Hi! COUSIN Tom,
ALFRED GAUTHIER's name was change from ILDEFONSE GAUTHIER. He was baptised under that name at St. Vincent Ferrier Church in ADAMSVILLE QC.
No wonder he changed this awful surname because phonetically in French it is " IL DÉFONCE ", which means " HE KNOCKS DOWN " or " HE SMASHES IN " or " HE BASHES IN ". Even the officiating priest had a hard time to write his given name which was written in the margin because the name "IDES" was crossed out on the document.
According to the baptismal records :
ILDEFONSE GAUTHIER was born on August 25, 1881 and baptised on Sunday August 28, 1881. He was the legitimate son of ALPHONSE GAUTHIER and ONESIME DUMAS. The godfather was PIERRE OSTIGUY, farmer, and the godmother was AURELIE VARIEUR, his wife, and GRANDMOTHER of the child. It is also written that the father is absent.
The signatur of officiating priest is J.C. BLANCHARD.
AURELIE VARIEUR is the widow of AMBROISE GAUTHIER. The latter is the father of ALPHONSE GAUTHIER husband of ONESIME DUMAS and grandfather of ILDEFONSE "ALFED" GAUTHIER.
