Merci, Monsieur Gauthier. You have helped to guide our search and certainly made me understand that the material name was Labarre and probably corrupted here. I am going to contunue to investigate the Metis families which lived in Prairie du Chien as may of them moved upriver to Mendota, St. Paul and New Canada, including Father Ravoux. There was one earlier Gauthier in the census records there -- Guillaume Gauthier who appears in the census of Prairie Du Chien in 1830. The occupation of Louis and Lucy's eldest son, Lewis was listed as "interpreter" in an early census of Mendota. I am thinking that meant more than translating French and Engliah but also a native language as Mendota was one of the earliest fur trade centers here run by Henry Sibley (later Gen. and Minnesota Gov. Sibley of Dakota War fame). If I make a significant breakthrough, I will let you know. Kristi Notify Administrator about this message?
