I am very sorry I didn't reply to your email. I lost it. Re-reading my book Carl Fredrick Gauss: Titan of Science by G. Waldo Dunnington, I find that my Gausses came from the area of Hanover more or less in the north of Germany. Also see my reply to M.Truman. There is a footnote: "The name is also common in Wurttemberg, where it may have no connection with the Hanoverian branch." Wurttemberg is now a province in the south of Germany, near Switzerland. Well, that's what these forums are for, right?
