Carl Friedrich Gauss' father, Gebhard Dietrich Gauss was b. abt 1744 in Brunswick, Germany. Carl Friedrich Gauss was b. Apr. 30, 1777 in Brunswick, but moved to Goettingen, Germany between 1805 and 1810. He died there. His children were Carl Joseph Gauss who remained in Germany and died in Hanover; Wilhelmine (Minna) Gauss, who also remained in Germany and died in Tubingen; Eugene Gauss who came to the United States in 1830, and ended up in Missouri; Wilhelm Gauss who came to the US in 1837, and also ended up in Missouri; and Henriette Gauss who died at Dresden, Germany. Other varients of the name were Gaus, Goss, Goess, Gooss, Goes, and Goos. Why not Gass? Apparently these names were common "in the region north of Brunswick as far as Meine and Kalberlah." This info comes from the book by G. Waldo Dunnington -- Carl Freidrich Gauss: Titan of Science, published in 1955.
