Hi,
I'm a Metz researcher who has been searching for what happened to Mary Metz who married Isaac Gardner/Garmer/Gaumer.They were married in Harmony, Warren County, NJ, July 29, 1844, but his name was recorded as Isaac "Gardner," of Lehigh County, PA.In the 1850 census for Harmony, his name is spelled Isaac "Garmer:"
#57/#57
Garmer, Isaac30LaborerMary25
William H.4/12
In other contexts, I've found the name "Gaumer" written interchangably with "Garmer" and believe that to have been the correct form of Isaac's name.
Most of Mary's Metz family moved to Michigan around 1855 and settled primarily in Macomb and Oakland Counties:her parents, John Metz and Rebecca (Kitchen) and brothers Jacob W. and family, Stewart K. and family and younger brothers Peter, Archibald D. and John D. (Two brothers, William K. and Henry stayed behind in NJ).
Just recently when the 1880 census came online, I found a Mary Gaumer, widow, 56, b. NJ, living in Isabella County. There are two other Gaumers listed for Isabella:William, 30, who corresponds to the infant William H. of the 1850 census record, and a Charles, 28, b. NJ, who was born after the 1850 census was taken.
I believe I've discovered what happened to my Isaac and Mary and it looks as if you have the other part of the puzzle. You can contact me directly for more, if you want.
Marilyn
