Descendants of Chloe McDaniels
Generation No. 1
1. CHLOE1 MCDANIELS was born 1793, and died 1837 in Virginia. She married SAMUEL B. GAULDIN
February 08, 1813 in Pittsylvania county, Virginia, son of WILLIAM GAULDIN and MARGARET (PEGGY).
He was born 1791 in Bedford County, Virginia, and died February 13, 1858 in Pittsylvania County,
Virginia/Cascade.

Notes for SAMUEL B. GAULDIN:
Samuel B. Gauldin is listed in the Virginia census of 1850 as a 57 year old man, living in Pittsylvania
county, Virginia with his wife, Mary, age 57 (b. 1794) and two daughters; Virginia, age 11 b. 1840 and
Letitia, age 9 b. 1842. He lists his occupation as "farmer" and lists the value of real estate as $600.00

Samuel Gauldin married twice, first to Chloe McDaniels, and then to Mary Nance
In the Index to wills, Virginia, 1851-1944, the will of Samuel Gaulding is filed Mar 17, 1857. Jenny
Gaulding and Letitia Gaulding are named as devisees to the will. They are also named as devisees to the
will of Malissa Gaulding, (widow of William T. Gauldin) filed June 20, 1870.

Military Service: War of 1812-
The third auditor's office of the Treasury dept. lists Samuel Gaulden, private under Capt. John Clarks
company of VA Militia entering service 25 Jan 1814 and served to 26 Mar 1814. Widow was pensioned on
Cert. 15473 at Knoxville, Tenn.
A. "War of 1812-Gaulding, Samuel or Samuel Golden, Mary M. (Nance) second wife, WC-15473, m.
March 1838 Pittsylvania County, Va sd 13 Feb 1858, served John Clark's Virginia Militia, lived in
Pittsylvania County, Va. First wife was Chloe (McDaniel)."
also..from the Va Bounty Land and Pension Applicants: "
B. "Gaulding/Golden, Samuel (BLW) died 13 Feb. 1858, Pittsylvania county, VA m. 1. Chloe McDaniel,
2. Mar. 1838 Mary M. Nance (p) Pittsylvania co., VA. Her last known residence: P.O. Chatham,
Pittsylvania Co, VA in 1878."

According to the Index to the births of slaves, Virginia, 1853-1866, two slaves owned by Samuel Gaulden
named Bill and Jack are born, 1854 and 1856, Pittsylvania Co.

From the Book of Deeds, Pittsylvania county 1827-1844, Sale of Property:
A. "April 29, 1844, Indenture between Samuel Gaulding and Thomas Jones for $600 his undivided interest
in the estate of William T. Gaulding (one legatee's part) and the estate of Decia Gaulding, free of claims
(DB 48:292)
B. "1855-Samuel Gaulding of Pittsylvania TO Mary M. Gaulding of same..love and affection he has for his
wife during her life and at her death to be equally divided between his two daughters, Virginia and
Lititia..190 acre tract, a part on which Samuel Gaulding now resides on water of Cascade Creek, adjacent to
the land of William J. Mill (or Hill), Arthur W. Eanes & John A. Hampton $ M.J. Hampton % c. No Witn."

THE WILL OF SAMUEL B. GAULDIN
From the Will Book #2 p. 229 (information provided by Linda Lepow)
       "17 Mar 1857-- In the name of God Amen. I Samuel Gaulding, Sr. of the County of Pittsylvania and
the State of Virginia being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and publish this my last will
and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me anytime heretofore made.
Imprimis-my will is that all my just debts and funeral chares shall my executors hereinafter maned be paid
out of my estate as soon after my decease shall by them be found convenient.
Item- I give and bequeth to my beloved daughter Jenny Gaulding my negro boy named Harry and also the
first living child which may hereinafter be born my negro woman Kate.
Item-I give and bequeth to my beloved daughter Letitia Gaulding my negro boy named Stephen and my
negro girl named Mary.
Item- I give and bequeth to my beloved wife my two negro women Kate and Mary for and during the term
of her natural life and after the death of my said wife it is my will and desire that the two said negro women
Kate and Mary shall go to my two beloved daughters Jenny Gaulding and Letitia Gaulding provided they
both survive my said wife and if not it is my will and desire that the two said negro women shall go to which
ever of my said daughters shall survive my wife provided nevertheless that this said negro woman Kate
shall have the privilege of choosing to which of my said daughters she shall belong in the event they both
survive my wife.
Item- I hereby execute and appoint Abraham Rover and John James to be executors of this my last will and
testament in -- of the Witnesses names below, this 22nd day of October 1852.

At a County Court continued and held for the County of Pittsylvania on this 17th day of March 1857. The
last Will and Testament of Samuel Gaulding, dec'd was proved by Peter R. Griggs as subscribing Witness to
be the act and deed of the Testator, and it appearing to the Court that James S. Poindexter the other
subscribing Witness hath departed this life and that his signature to the said will is in the hand writing of the
said Poindexter, it is ordered that the said will be recorded.
